Time for Organization!

I consider myself to be a bit of a perfectionist.  I also enjoy order in my life.  Yes, I will even admit to being a control freak (and I know Aaron and my family would all agree on that one…ha ha!).  One area in my life that I take a lot of pride in is my home.  Whether it is a house or an apartment (and I have had many homes in the past 12 years), I always try to put my mark on it.  I keep a neat house and enjoy the fact that at almost any time a friend could stop by and I would not feel embarrassed by the state of my home.  But what is underneath the neat in my home is another story.  And one that I want to conquer.

When I go to other homes, I’m always looking around at their “grown up” decorations.  I sometimes feel like my home, while nice, is somewhat pieced together with no real theme.  It is cozy, but it doesn’t flow.  And while I often purge a lot of stuff every time I move (either donating or disposing of things), I still have a lot of items that I don’t need and need to get rid of.

Therefore, I have decided in lieu of goals or resolutions for 2013, I am going to make 2013 my year of organization.  Each month will focus on one area of my house.  Throughout that month, I will organize, purge, clean, and alter as I see fit.  Of course there will be before and after photos.  I live in an apartment, so the differences won’t be overly drastic, but I hope to be able to update everything to make it a lovely and functional space.

I have been looking for inspiration on Pinterest and have found tons!  I’m really looking forward to this!  My timeline looks like this:

January:  Master bedroom closets (yup, there are two in there)

February:  Master bedroom

March:  Master bathroom

April:  Kitchen

May:  Living Room

June:  Guest Room

July:  Guest Closet

August:  Guest Bathroom

September:  Entry and Coat Closet

October – December:  Enjoy!

Some of these months might run into each other.  For example, the month I conquer the master bedroom closets might run into the master bedroom month because I will want to donate all the clothes at once and I have a ton in my dresser, which is in my master bedroom.  I can’t wait to continue searching for solutions that will fit with my home and getting rid of a lot of stuff that I just don’t need anymore.

  1. I’m with ya! I adore order and hate clutter. I’m a huge fan of the ‘a place for everything and everything in its place” motto. Since moving to Hawaii, we’ve downsized quite a bit, going from 2200+ square feet (finished basement family room, living room, large eat in kitchen, dining room) to 1200 square feet(small kitchen, attached dining room/living room). I’ve already donated a ton and am always up for more decluttering. I’d like to also get my brain organized in 2013, but I feel that may be too big of a chore to tackle!

    I kind of dig that my home is decorated as “eclectic.” Seriously, whatever we happened to stumble-upon, it was there.
