Dutch Baby and My Favorite Baby (err…toddler)

Welcome!

Welcome!

What a Saturday!  I had a great day being a tourist.  Sometimes you have to be a tourist in your own town, you know?  But before I tell you about my tourist activities, I made an epic breakfast that I need to tell you about.

Come to mama...

Come to mama…

I have always wanted to try a dutch baby.  A dutch baby, or German pancake, is essentially a sweet popover to eat at breakfast.  I found a recipe and went to town.  It was so easy and turned out delicious!  Basically you preheat the oven to 475 degrees.  I used a 9 inch pie pan for this and put it in the oven while it was preheating.  Once the oven is preheated, I dropped 2 tablespoons of butter in the pan and decreased the heat to 425 degrees.  While the butter melted, I mixed 2 room temperature eggs, 1/2 c whole milk (warmed in the microwave for 20 seconds), and 1/2 cup flour.  I whisked the eggs until pale before adding the milk and flour.  I also added a pinch of salt and about a teaspoon of vanilla.  Once the batter is mixed and the butter is melted, pour the batter into the pan.  Don’t mix the batter with the butter.  Bake for 12 minutes.

Deliciousness.

Deliciousness.

The dutch baby puffs up beautifully in the oven and deflates relatively quickly once you take it out of the oven.  I slid mine out and sliced it into wedges.  I guess these are traditionally eaten with fresh lemon juice and powdered sugar, but I doused mine in maple syrup.  So good and a nice change to a weekend breakfast.

I met my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History later in the morning.  Can you believe I have lived here for over 1 1/2 years and this is my first trip to a museum in DC?  Pathetic, right?  It was kind of fun playing tourist today and it was especially fun wandering the museum with a 2 1/2 year old.  He is a trip.

There is so much to learn!

There is so much to learn!

Brady, my nephew, LOVED the museum.  If it is an animal or construction equipment, he can name it, so the museum was right up his alley.  The first exhibit we went to was the Mammals.  Let’s just say someone was naming EVERY animal we saw.  My favorite was when he told me the noise an elephant makes is “boom, boom” and when he pointed at a picture and told me it was a meerkat.  Oh, and when I told him “Look buddy, it’s a monkey,” he proceeded to correct me and tell me it was an orangutan.  Yeah.

I wear this under my cammies.

I really enjoyed seeing the Hope Diamond.  Holy macaroni that is a big rock.  But is was dusty.  Which I found strange.  Can’t they afford to clean the Hope Diamond?

Everyone has to eat.

Everyone has to eat.

One of the coolest parts of the museum is the butterfly exhibit.  You have to pay to see it, but it was worth it.  There were butterflies everywhere and it was fun seeing them.  The one above was eating, which I had never seen before.  My brother-in-law was especially attractive to the butterflies and had one sitting on him about half the time we were in there.

Go!

Go!

Brady enjoyed the butterflies as well.  He spent a great amount of time talking to this butterfly.  He told it “Go!” and “Flap your wings!” over and over again.  The butterfly just chilled out on the ledge and didn’t take any of Brady’s directions, but it was adorable to see.  I wish I would have taken video of it.  He was so serious!

Thanks guys!

Thanks guys!

I’m glad I was able to spend a few hours with my sister and her family.  I love that we live so close to each other now and I can get a little Brady lovin’ on a Saturday afternoon.  A couple Brady kisses can make a persons day.

Lesser of two evils…

In my mind, we are playing today.

In my mind, we are playing today.

There is apparently a football game on today.  I’m less than excited about it because my team isn’t playing.  I think that might be a mistake on the part of the NFL, but since I haven’t completed my letter to them lodging my complaints on the officiating of this past season, I can’t really go into it that much.  All I know is that it wasn’t a good call on the part of the NFL to not let my Steelers play.

Word.

Word.

Even though my Steelers were slighted, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to watch the game.  I am.  I’m torn between who to cheer for though.  As a Steelers fan, it is in my DNA to hate the Ravens.  However, if the 49s win, they will tie my Steelers for the most Superbowl wins at 6.  It really is a lose, lose.  But, I guess we can always just get our seventh next season.

If you can't beat them, just make them fat.

If you can’t beat them, just make them fat.

I always volunteer to bring desserts when I am going somewhere.  For the watching of the Superbowl tonight, I obviously volunteered to bring cookies.  It was a bit of a selfish option because I really wanted to try these cookies out.  The cream cheese in the dough really takes these cookies over the top and they are delightfully chewy.  Probably my new go-to recipe for soft sugar cookies.  And since there will be kids at the Superbowl party I’m going to, the M&M’s will be a hit.

Here's to the losers. Both teams.

Here’s to the losers. Both teams.

Maybe I’m a poor loser, but I can’t get behind either of these teams tonight.  But I can get behind the commercial watching.  And I can get behind these cookies.  So try them out.  At least something will be good about the Superbowl if you bring these to your party.

Go Steelers!  🙂

Random Thursday (Whiny Edition)

Hello. How are you? Doing well? I’m good, thanks for asking!  My life has been a bit of blur recently.  Do you have weeks in your life where you feel almost bipolar (not making light of a mental illness, just the best way to describe the way I have been feeling)?  I’m having a bit […]

A Hearty Craft

This past weekend I felt an overwhelming urge to do a craft.  It needed to be something that was quick to complete and it wouldn’t hurt if it was a Pinterest idea (I have so many that I will never get to…).  I saw this on Pinterest a few weeks ago and thought it was […]

Time for Organization!

I consider myself to be a bit of a perfectionist.  I also enjoy order in my life.  Yes, I will even admit to being a control freak (and I know Aaron and my family would all agree on that one…ha ha!).  One area in my life that I take a lot of pride in is […]

12/12/12

How many people are going to talk about 12/12/12 today?  My guess is a bunch.  And why not?  It is cool to think that this is the last time we will see a date like this in our lifetime.  My 12/12/12 started pretty early, but it was for a good reason. I had an appointment […]

Found it!

Yesterday, after posting about my lack of Christmas spirit, I decided to just fake it till I make it.  I was able to leave work a little earlier than normal so I headed to Target and decided if I didn’t have Christmas spirit then I would buy some!  The Christmas decorations at my house obviously […]

Wanted…some Christmas spirit!

In years past, I have always been full of the Christmas spirit.  I seek out the “just right” gifts to give to those I care about.  I decorate my house the weekend after Thanksgiving.  I listen to the 24 hour Christmas music radio station nonstop.  Basically, I embrace the month of December and all of […]

What the what?

On Thanksgiving eve, my sister and I went to see “The Twilight Saga:  Breaking Dawn – Part 2.”     We were both pretty excited about seeing the movie, but about an hour into it, I turned to my sister and told her I thought the film (and yes, I use that term rather loosely) was moving really slow.  […]

Starting something new…

Hi there. I’ve missed you. I know it’s been a while since I was here.  I know.  I have no good reasons for the absence.  Saying I’ve been busy seems dumb since we are all busy.  But I guess I have been busy.  Really, I have just had nothing to say and I decided to […]
